Given the circumstances, I felt very lucky to be in Mr Agrawal's care. From the very first appointment, his approach was honest but more importantly incredibly reassuring, and I genuinely believed he would help and guide me through my breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. The surgery went as expected and because of the lump's location (towards my armpit), Mr Agrawal was able to remove the lump and sentinel node with just one incision - the scar has healed beautifully. Special shout out also to Gwynedd (breast cancer nurse) and Charlie (Mr Agrawal's PA) for their support and efficiency.

Mr Avi Agrawal is a superb professional and very clever surgeon. The two, very neat incisions he made when operating on my breast and armpit three weeks ago for my lumpectomy and sentinel node op are healing fast and and are already unobtrusive. A breast cancer diagnosis is not what anyone wants. But if that's what you have, it helps immeasurably to have a surgeon like Mr. Agrawal, who explained every step clearly. He is a gifted communicator, does not mess around with the scary stuff, but leavens this with compassion and a light touch. He judged the tone perfectly for me and for my husband, who came with me to appointments. He is very well supported by cancer nurse Gwynedd (glad our contact will continue now surgery is behind me) and secretary Charlie (likewise). I could not have been in better hands.

I would struggle to find the words to sing the praises of Mr Avi Agrawal and his team enough. This wonderful, knowledgeable, lovely man has a kind and calming manner about him and leaves you feeling safe in his care. I had a mastectomy and reconstruction following breast cancer and am very happy with his 'handywork'. A friend of mine is now going through the same thing and it was lovely to be able to tell her that she cannot be in better hands. I will be forever grateful to Mr Agrawal and his team. /yn

I feel so fortunate that I have been cared for my Mr Agrawal and his wonderful team over the past few weeks. From interpreting the initial scans and test results, to discussing the best course of treatment, to carrying out the lumpectomy surgery and sentinel lymph node biopsy without delay, to meeting me a week later to give me the incredible news that further post-surgery tests reveal I am cancer free, I have received nothing but the highest standard of care, and been treated with compassion and empathy. Initially, I was totally overwhelmed with apprehension and uncertainty as my head struggled to process the impact of the diagnosis. Mr Agrawal calmly and reassuringly explained the recommended treatment and got on with it without delay. At the same time, I was given vital support by Gwynedd, his specialist breast cancer nurse. This helped to keep my mental health on an even keel and maintain a sense of optimism during a time of acute stress. Thank you so much. Mr Agrawal used his neat surgical skills to ensure that my scar will be hardly visible in the future. The anaesthetists were lovely, especially as it was my first experience of surgery. Charlie, his PA, is friendly and super-efficient. Huge respect for you all. I feel I can look forward to the future now, but I am reassured that Mr Agrawal will continue to check on my health regularly over the coming years.

Mr Agrawal has been a Consultant / Surgeon / Doctor to me over the last 5+ years. He is friendly, makes me feel very comfortable but at the same time has always maintained a very professional attitude towards me. Very luckily for me, since my diagnosis, our meetings have always been pretty straight forward, but I really do feel very safe in his hands and would feel very happy to discuss anything with him and would recommend him to anyone. He, to me, is a life saver and I'm very grateful to have met him :-)

Profile

As a fully trained Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon, I carry out regular diagnostic fast track breast clinics and a full range of breast surgery, including sentinel node biopsy with intra-operative analysis, oncoplastic surgery and breast reconstruction. I also have a special interest in and undertake surgery for skin cancer.

I graduated from the London Hospital Medical College, University of London. My general surgical training was based around several centres of excellence in managing breast diseases, including The Royal Marsden Hospital where I developed oncoplastic techniques to optimise the cosmetic outcome of breast surgery.

I have always been interested in cancer surgery, and as part of my higher surgical training at the University College London, I was awarded a master's degree for my research into Gene Therapy for the prevention and treatment of cancer.

In 2007 I was appointed Consultant Surgeon at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust. I have been the Clinical Lead/Head of department for the Breast and Endocrine Surgery and Surgical Oncology department for Portsmouth for over 10 years. I have also chaired and lead the Breast Multidisciplinary Team at Queen Alexandra Hospital for over 7 years.
I am the Surgical Lead for breast screening cancers and also the Joint Regional Lead for breast cancer for Wessex. I am the Lead Trainer for the Portsmouth National Oncoplastic Fellowship Program and have helped many trainees develop their skills for their consultant career.
